This Saturday come on down to the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and enjoy an exciting tour of the night sky featuring, stars, constellations and planets visible to our naked eye.

Joining you will be a special guest presenter from one of the Mauna Kea observatories sharing their latest research using the 3D planetarium technology. Imagine being able to fly through space to planets and stars far beyond our own- all in true 3D stereo!

Tomorrow night from 6:30-9:00PM if you’re looking for a nice family event, check out the Imiloa Astronomy Center’s “Vesta Fiesta”. The Vesta Fiesta features a fun and educational live planetarium presentation showing the asteroid belt, details of the Dawn spacecraft, and a 3D stereoscopic fly out to Vesta. Celebrate Mozart and His Music with the Kona Music Society presenting Requiem in D-Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Sit back and enjoy the wonderful sounds of the Mozart Requiem Concert at the Sheraton Keahou Bay Resort. The concert will feature vocalist including Chinese soprano Bai, He; Mezzo soprano Maya Hoover; Tenor Kaweo Kanoho and Baritone Timothy Carney. The concert starts at 4:00 pm with an informative pre-concert chat at 3:00 pm with Kamuela Philharmonic Artistic Director Madeline Schatz. Tickets for the concert will be:

The 2011 Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaii kicked off yesterday at 9:00 am at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium. The week long Merrie Monarch Festival will run from April 24-30, 2011 and will feature and internationally renowned Hula competition, craft fair, art show and a parade through Hilo.

The event will take place at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo which is about a five minute drive from the Hilltop Legacy Inn. Most activities during the festival will be free to the public. Tickets for the three-day Hula competition can be purchased the the Official Merrie Monarch Website.

If you can’t make it the 2011 Merrie Monarch Festival  you’re not out of luck yet. KFVE will be streaming the event live online on their website.

Sometimes in the evening after dinner,  I enjoy drinking  red ginseng tea.  It helps me relax through the night.   I introduced it to my guest and he liked it very much.  I read this article  below online.  I hope you can try it and enjoy it too. 

In Southeast Asia, Korean red ginseng tea has been used for centuries to stimulate brain function and ward off fatigue. It is said to help protect the liver and regulate blood sugar. Historically, Asian cultures have believed that it can slow down the aging process, regulate heart functions and improve the body’s immune systems.

1. Roots

   • The Korean red ginseng is made from the roots of the plant when it is at least six years old. The plant grows wild in 100 percent organic conditions in Southeast Asia. It is also widely cultivated under organic conditions in Korea because the soil and climate are best suited to its growth. The red ginseng root contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, essential oils and natural enzymes.

   Tea

   • About five or six slices of raw ginseng root are required to make one cup of tea. Powdered tea purchased in tea bags has been ground to provide the easiest access. Raw or bagged tea should be steeped for at least five minutes to gain the full effects of the healing roots. Longer steeping makes stronger tea. Red ginseng is typically sweeter than green ginseng, but both can be sweetened further with sugar or honey. Ginseng tea bags and loose tea can be reused two or three times

Yes, this recipe has Spam in it. If you didn’t alread know, Spam is very popular here on the Islands. It’s normal to see families in the supermarket buying Spam by the cases. Spam musubi is a very popular snack and lunch food in Hawaii made in the tradition of Japanese onigiri, also known as omusubi. Spam musubi is composed of a block of rice with a slice of grilled Spam on top and nori (seaweed) wrapping to hold it together. Now before you make any assumptions, please make sure to try it first. I’m sure you won’t stop at just one bite.

Ingredients

• 2 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
• 2 cups water
• 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
• 1/4 cup soy sauce
• 1/4 cup oyster sauce
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• 1 (12 ounce) container fully cooked luncheon meat (e.g. Spam)
• 5 sheets sushi nori (dry seaweed)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

1. Soak uncooked rice for 4 hours; drain and rinse.
2. In a saucepan bring 2 cups water to a boil. Add rice and stir. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in rice vinegar, and set aside to cool.
3. In a separate bowl, stir together soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar until sugar is completely dissolved. Slice luncheon meat lengthwise into 10 slices, or to desired thickness, and marinate in sauce for 5 minutes.
4. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium high heat. Cook slices for 2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned. Cut nori sheets in half and lay on a flat work surface. Place a rice press in the center of the sheet, and press rice tightly inside. Top with a slice of luncheon meat, and remove press. Wrap nori around rice mold, sealing edges with a small amount of water. (Rice may also be formed by hand in the shape of the meat slices, 1 inch thick.) Musubi may be served warm or chilled.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2010 grand final will take place Tomorrow.  The event will be held at  Kawainui Falls in Hilo. sadly, because the event will be held on private property it will not be open to the public. However you can win tickets to the event by tuning in to 94.7 FM in Hilo 101.5 FM in Kona. The Competition started off in Mexico and made its way onto Norway, Italy, Switzerland and now Hawaii. A natural waterfall will be the scene where the 2010 winner is crowned.
